Anthropic Increases AI Policy Budget to $40 Million Over Safety Fears

Anthropic has bolstered its financial support for Public First Action, a bipartisan advocacy organization, with an additional $20 million donation. This new funding raises the company’s total contributions to $40 million, reflecting its commitment to advancing transparency, safety, and public education around artificial intelligence. The AI company, concerned by the rapid development of AI technologies such as its own Claude Mythos model, aims to address potential risks associated with these advancements. Importantly, the funds are designated for public education and AI policy endeavors, explicitly excluding any use for political campaign support.

This financial boost comes amid growing discussions in the United States regarding the regulation of advanced AI technologies. Anthropic stresses the need for heightened safeguards, pointing out that increasingly sophisticated AI systems could threaten critical infrastructures, like hospitals, power grids, and financial networks, if misused. The company’s call for enhanced oversight includes proposals for mandatory independent testing and greater governmental authority to block the release of models that do not meet established safety criteria.

Coinciding with the announcement, Anthropic has introduced the Claude Mythos Preview, its latest cybersecurity-focused AI model, which is initially accessible to selected users in government, technology, and financial sectors. The company advocates for stricter export controls on advanced AI chips and is vocal about preventing foreign entities from replicating leading US technologies. Chief Executive Dario Amodei has been at the forefront, pushing for these measures to ensure AI systems remain secure and beneficial.

Despite Anthropic’s push for stricter regulations, there is some opposition. Competitors argue that such measures might hinder innovation and diminish the United States’ edge in the global AI arena, especially against competitors like China. This debate is unfolding as artificial intelligence becomes a pressing policy and national security issue, particularly with the US midterm elections approaching.
