Meta has reached a settlement with California and 28 other US states, committing to significant modifications on its platforms, Facebook and Instagram, to address accusations of harming teenagers and promoting addictive behaviors. This decision results from allegations that Meta’s features encouraged excessive usage among young users.
Under the terms of the settlement, Meta will implement enhanced protections for teenagers across the nation. These measures include imposing daily usage limits, restricting notifications during school hours, and limiting overnight access to its apps. Additionally, the company will curtail the availability of certain plastic surgery filters aimed at young audiences.
Financially, the settlement could see Meta paying up to $18 billion, with the funds distributed among the participating states over a decade, pending court approval. California stands to gain between $1.5 billion and $2.1 billion, while Colorado could receive approximately $615 million. The states involved had accused Meta of intentionally creating features that encouraged prolonged usage by young people and of gathering data from children under 13 without adequate parental consent.
Despite these allegations, Meta has denied any wrongdoing. The company has expressed that the settlement would be more impactful if other major social media platforms like TikTok, Snap, and YouTube adopted similar protective measures. Meta’s call for industry-wide safeguards highlights the broader challenges social media companies face in addressing youth-related concerns.
This agreement emerges amid a backdrop of thousands of lawsuits from families, schools, and government officials targeting social media’s alleged adverse effects on children and teenagers.
