Apple’s anticipated entry into the foldable smartphone market with its debut foldable iPhone is expected to invigorate a sector that has recently seen a decline in momentum. Despite a year-on-year decrease of 8% in global foldable smartphone shipments during the first half of 2026, market analysts predict a robust recovery in the latter half. Projections indicate shipments could reach approximately 23 million units by the end of the year, with continuous growth anticipated into 2027.
Analysts foresee Apple quickly capturing a significant portion of the foldable market upon the release of its first foldable device. Smart Analytics Global predicts that Apple’s share could rise to 25% of global foldable shipments by the close of 2026 and further increase to around 41% by 2027. Nevertheless, initial supply constraints are expected due to the complexities involved in manufacturing foldable technology. The device’s predicted price point exceeding $2,000 may also restrict its initial demand and availability, potentially leading Apple to launch it in select markets before a broader global rollout.
Research firm IDC suggests that Apple’s entry could transform foldables into one of the fastest-growing segments in the smartphone industry. According to IDC’s forecast, Apple could ship more than 17 million foldable iPhones by 2027, capturing roughly 40% of the global foldable market. The overall market for foldable smartphones is projected to grow to 22.9 million units in 2026, marking a 12.6% increase, followed by an 18% growth reaching approximately 27 million units in 2027.
The introduction of Apple’s foldable iPhone is poised to reshape the competitive landscape, challenging established manufacturers such as Samsung, Huawei, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Reports indicate that Apple’s initial foldable model might feature a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.8-inch foldable main display, equipped with Touch ID, an A20 Pro chip based on a 2-nanometer process, and dual 48-megapixel cameras.
If Apple successfully navigates the manufacturing hurdles and addresses the high price point, its entry into the foldable smartphone market could provide a substantial boost to the category, establishing the company as a dominant player in a relatively short timeframe.
