Utility-Scale Projects Propel Japan’s Battery Storage Market Growth Forward

Japan is witnessing a surge in the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) market, propelled by the efforts of international developers, local energy firms, and technology providers to expand large-scale energy storage initiatives nationwide. This rapid development is largely driven by the need to accommodate growing renewable energy production, manage increasing solar power curtailment, and tackle grid connection challenges.

The expansion of battery storage systems is bolstered by supportive government policies, established long-term revenue mechanisms, and a rise in investments dedicated to utility-scale storage infrastructure. Among the notable projects making progress, Energy Vault has acquired an 850 MW BESS portfolio, while Neoen is advancing its 100 MW/400 MWh battery project in Hyogo Prefecture. Additionally, Japanese companies like Mitsubishi Estate, Itochu Corporation, and Tokyo Century are channeling resources into significant storage facilities, with PowerX providing a 230.1 MWh battery system for a project in Fukuoka Prefecture.

Further developments in regions such as Gunma, Niigata, and Kyushu indicate a growing confidence in Japan’s energy storage industry. This momentum is partly fueled by government incentives, long-term decarbonization auctions, and policies aimed at enhancing grid reliability and the integration of renewable energy sources.

The increasing capacity for solar energy in Japan, coupled with the country’s target to boost the share of renewable energy in electricity generation by 2040, is expected to further escalate the demand for battery storage solutions. Although lithium-ion batteries dominate the market, Japan continues to strive for a balance between creating competitive battery supply chains and enhancing domestic energy storage capabilities and grid resilience.
