Japan’s Extraordinary Diet Session to Tackle Tax Cuts and Parliamentary Reform

Japan’s government has officially announced the convening of an extraordinary Diet session from October 5 to December 12. This 69-day session is set to focus on significant economic and political measures, with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expected to present a policy speech on the opening day. Following her address, lawmakers from both houses of parliament will have the opportunity to pose questions, setting the stage for detailed legislative discussions.

A primary agenda item during this session will be the consideration of legislation aimed at temporarily lowering the consumption tax on food and beverages. The proposed measure would reduce the tax from the current 8% to 1% for a two-year period starting in April 2027. This initiative is part of broader efforts to provide economic relief and stimulate consumer spending.

Additionally, the session will address legislation concerning the potential reduction of seats in the House of Representatives. This proposal is part of ongoing discussions about political reform and the optimization of parliamentary representation.

The government intends to collaborate with opposition parties to garner support for these proposed measures and to advance its legislative agenda during the session. This cooperative approach is expected to facilitate the passage of key bills and ensure a productive session.
