Russia has lodged a formal protest against Japan’s decision to deploy U.S.-made Typhon medium-range missile systems on Kyushu, a southern island of Japan, citing security concerns. The Russian Foreign Ministry communicated its objections earlier this month, warning that the deployment could destabilize regional peace. Moscow has urged Tokyo to reconsider and remove the missile systems.
The issue was further addressed by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko during discussions with Japanese Ambassador Akira Muto in Moscow. The diplomatic exchange underscores the ongoing tensions between the two nations, which are also entangled in a territorial conflict over the southern Kuril Islands. These islands are controlled by Russia but claimed by Japan, a dispute that has hindered the formalization of a post-World War II peace treaty between the countries.
Russia maintains its stance on sovereignty over the southern Kuril Islands, a position that has consistently strained bilateral relations. In light of the missile deployment, Moscow has called on Japan to seriously consider its security concerns, emphasizing the potential impact on regional stability.
