Japan’s Military Expansion and Ukraine Drone Ties Criticized by China

China has voiced its concerns regarding Japan’s increasing military initiatives, cautioning that recent shifts in Japan’s defense strategies could jeopardize peace and stability in the region. During a press briefing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun addressed reports about Ukrainian drone companies seeking partnerships with Japanese firms. He emphasized that international collaborations should aim to enhance regional stability and security, rather than escalate tensions.

Guo highlighted that Japan has been progressively expanding its military capabilities over the past few years. This includes developing medium- and long-range offensive systems, loosening restrictions on the export of lethal weapons, broadening the activities of its Self-Defense Forces, and reinforcing security alliances with nations outside Asia. According to Guo, these actions surpass the boundaries of Japan’s postwar defense framework and challenge its historically defense-oriented security policy.

The spokesman expressed that Japan’s military advancements could potentially compromise the international order established after World War II, countering the nation’s long-standing image as a proponent of peace. He underscored the significance of adhering to principles that have traditionally underpinned Japan’s security policies, which are now perceived to be at risk due to these developments.

In response, China has called on the global community to remain alert to what it terms as increasing militarization and has urged collective efforts to maintain regional stability. By drawing attention to what it sees as Japan’s departure from its pacifist post-war stance, China seeks to rally international vigilance and cooperation in preserving peace in the region.
