US Imposes 100% Tariffs on Drone Imports Amid Security Worries

The United States has introduced new tariffs on drone imports, imposing up to 100% tariffs on certain drones and drone components due to national security concerns and an effort to reduce reliance on supply chains dominated by China. This policy specifically targets unmanned aircraft systems, especially larger drones that weigh more than 25 kilograms and possess capabilities related to national security, such as thermal cameras and docking stations. Smaller drones will see a 25% tariff under this new policy.

In addition to targeting Chinese products, the US has expanded tariffs to include drones and components from several key trading partners. Imports from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will face a 15% tariff. Meanwhile, products from the United Kingdom will encounter a 10% tariff, as long as the hardware, software, and technology originate from the listed countries or the US. Most of these tariffs are set to take effect on September 3.

The White House asserts that these measures are designed to bolster the US defense and industrial sectors, promote domestic drone manufacturing, and create jobs within the country. By imposing these tariffs, the US aims to decrease its dependence on foreign suppliers. China currently dominates the global drone market, with Shenzhen-based DJI holding a substantial share of the US commercial drone market. DJI has previously been subject to US restrictions due to national security concerns.

US officials have raised alarms that foreign-made drones could pose risks, including surveillance, data collection of sensitive information, and potential attacks. The US Federal Communications Commission has also advocated for increased domestic production to mitigate these risks. This move by the US comes amid ongoing trade and technology tensions with China, which has also implemented restrictions impacting drone exports to the US and targeted several American companies.
