In a significant diplomatic encounter, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale in Tokyo, emphasizing a renewed commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. This meeting comes as the Solomon Islands navigates a shift in its foreign policy under new leadership, seeking broader engagement with traditional partners. Both leaders agreed to expand development cooperation, highlighted by Japan’s offer of 3 billion yen (around $18.3 million) in yen loans, and to foster increased people-to-people exchanges.
Prime Minister Takaichi expressed Japan’s ambition to forge a “strong and prosperous cooperative relationship” with the Solomon Islands, underscoring shared values such as freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. Prime Minister Wale expressed appreciation for Japan’s support, noting the critical need for assistance as Pacific island nations grapple with various economic and development challenges.
This diplomatic meeting follows a notable change in the Solomon Islands’ foreign policy. In 2019, the country shifted its diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China and subsequently signed a security agreement with Beijing in 2022. This agreement permitted Chinese naval access to Solomon Islands’ ports and allowed Chinese security personnel operations within the country, raising regional concerns about China’s expanding influence in the Pacific.
Since assuming office in May 2026, Prime Minister Wale has indicated a potential pivot in foreign policy. He has committed to reviewing the security pact with China and has openly criticized China’s recent submarine-launched ballistic missile test in the Pacific. Wale’s initial diplomatic visits included Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan, illustrating his intent to strengthen ties with longstanding partners.
For Japan, enhancing its relationship with the Solomon Islands aligns with its broader Free and Open Indo-Pacific strategy, which aims to promote regional stability, security, and cooperation. As a token of goodwill, Prime Minister Takaichi presented Prime Minister Wale with a football donated by the Nara Prefectural Football Association, recognizing the sport’s popularity in the Solomon Islands and symbolizing Takaichi’s connections to Nara Prefecture.
