A Japanese trade delegation led by former Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya has visited China in an effort to sustain dialogue and ameliorate strained bilateral relations between the two nations. The delegation, comprising approximately 50 members including Japanese business executives, aims to engage with senior Chinese officials during their visit.
Iwaya emphasized the importance of dialogue at a time when Japan-China relations are under strain due to security concerns. These tensions have been exacerbated by remarks from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Japan’s potential response to a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan. Despite these challenges, Iwaya expressed his intent to exchange views with Chinese leaders if the opportunity arises.
This visit follows a recent summit in Washington between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, where discussions covered trade, artificial intelligence, and other bilateral issues. The interactions underscored the significance of diplomatic exchanges amid complex international dynamics.
The Japanese delegation’s visit had previously been delayed due to the death of former Foreign Minister Yohei Kono, who had been leading the trade promotion organization. This visit is part of ongoing efforts by Japan to maintain open communication channels with China, despite the current geopolitical tensions.
