Japan Launches Program to Assist Foreign Residents with Language and Lifestyle

Japan is set to implement a mandatory educational program focused on Japanese language and lifestyle for foreigners aiming for permanent residency or long-term visas exceeding a decade. This initiative may also play a role in assessing applicants for Japanese citizenship. By enhancing understanding of the local language, laws, customs, and daily life, the program seeks to facilitate better integration of foreign residents into Japanese society.

The authorities plan to finalize the program’s structure and develop an online verification system by the fiscal year 2027, with a trial run anticipated to commence the following year. Primarily targeting individuals intending to reside in Japan for medium to long durations, the program will offer flexible learning modules. These modules will cover essential topics such as daily living, parenting, education, healthcare, and elderly care, ensuring comprehensive preparation for prospective residents.

To accommodate diverse needs, an online version of the program will be available, enabling prospective migrants to start their learning journey before their arrival in Japan. This approach aims to provide a seamless transition and a smoother adaptation process for newcomers.

In addition to the educational program, officials are contemplating the introduction of minimum Japanese language proficiency requirements for those applying for permanent residency and citizenship. This consideration aligns with the broader objective of aiding the integration of foreign residents and assisting local communities in managing the increasing international population within the country.
