Japan’s Defense Ministry is set to introduce a new procurement system aimed at integrating advanced technologies developed by startups into its defense equipment. Announced by Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi on Friday, the initiative seeks to enhance Japan’s defense capabilities by fast-tracking the involvement of startups in the defense sector, particularly in areas such as drones and artificial intelligence.
The program will offer upfront funding for technology development, encouraging startups to propose innovative solutions for defense applications. In its initial phase, the ministry will solicit proposals for low-cost, mass-producible small attack drones and related equipment tailored for the Ground Self-Defense Force and Maritime Self-Defense Force. There is a strong preference for utilizing domestically produced components in these technologies.
During the concept stage, multiple companies will be selected to participate, with the selection process progressively narrowing down candidates through prototype development and testing. The ministry’s goal is to accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge technologies that can bolster the country’s modern warfare capabilities.
In addition to drones, the defense ministry is looking for technologies that can improve warehouse management, reduce staffing requirements, and enhance equipment to diminish aircraft noise, thereby improving the working conditions for Air Self-Defense Force personnel.
Applications for the first round of proposals will be accepted starting October 2. This new system is expected to foster greater innovation within Japan’s defense industry, strengthening its overall defense posture by integrating the latest technological advancements from the startup sector.
