Iran has announced plans to create a new “exclusion zone” near the Strait of Hormuz, aiming at vessels it suspects of attempting to traverse this vital maritime passage. Mohsen Rezaei, recently appointed head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, indicated that this zone would stretch from the U.S. naval blockade area toward the Strait of Hormuz and into the Arabian Gulf. Vessels identified as intending to cross the strait could face inclusion on an Iranian sanctions list.
This development comes amid heightened tensions following a U.S. military strike on three Iranian oil tankers in response to Iran’s ballistic missile attack on U.S. warships. Iran has also claimed responsibility for hitting an unmanned U.S. vessel trying to enter the strait, an assertion dismissed by the U.S. military. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical artery for global oil and gas transportation, and disruptions here have sparked concerns about potential impacts on energy prices and the broader global economy.
The United States has bolstered its naval presence to support a blockade of Iranian ports, aiming to prevent Iran from exporting oil, alongside intensifying economic sanctions following the breakdown of diplomatic talks. Despite the ongoing friction, U.S. officials maintain that significant volumes of oil continue to flow through the Strait of Hormuz, aided by naval security and alternative pipelines in the region.
Rezaei emphasized that while Iran remains open to diplomacy, it seeks stronger assurances in any prospective agreements. Negotiations between Washington and Tehran have hit an impasse, marred by mutual accusations of treaty violations.
