India, Japan Boost Trade Ties with Enhanced Investment and Tech Collaboration

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently wrapped up a four-day visit to Japan, during which he observed a significant interest from Japanese businesses in expanding their investments and partnerships with India, particularly in the fields of manufacturing and technology. The visit was accompanied by a delegation of nearly 200 business representatives and included meetings with companies in sectors such as robotics, semiconductors, electronics, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing.

Goyal noted that the discussions held during the visit have already begun to yield potential investment opportunities. Notably, a Japanese robotics company has identified an Indian partner for investment and is considering manufacturing robots within India. This development underscores the growing momentum in forging new business collaborations between the two nations.

A central theme of the visit was to increase the presence of Japanese companies operating in India, which currently stands at about 1,500. India is keen on significantly boosting Japanese investment across emerging industries, a move that could further enhance economic ties between the two countries.

In addition, India and Japan have initiated discussions on revising the India-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. These talks aim to address regulatory concerns and explore opportunities for enhanced business-to-business cooperation, which could further cement the economic relationship between the two nations.

Both countries are aiming to strengthen their trade and investment connections, with a bilateral trade target set at $27.47 billion for the fiscal year 2025-26 and an ambitious long-term goal of reaching $50 billion by 2030. This strategic vision highlights the commitment of both nations to deepen their economic engagement and mutual prosperity.
