Japan is charting a course to secure its future energy supplies by planning the replacement of several aging nuclear reactors by the mid-21st century. According to a draft proposal from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the country is considering replacing up to five reactors by the 2040s and an additional 14 by the 2050s. This move is part of a strategic effort to maintain a stable power supply as existing reactors approach the end of their operational lives.
Currently, nuclear power contributes less than 10 percent to Japan’s electricity generation. However, the proposal envisions increasing this share to about 20 percent in the coming decades. This shift is driven by rising energy demands linked to the growth of artificial intelligence, data centers, and semiconductor manufacturing industries. Without increasing its generation capacity, Japan could face a significant power deficit by the 2040s.
The initiative represents the first time the Japanese government has set specific targets for replacing nuclear reactors. Officials emphasize that this plan is crucial for ensuring energy security, reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels, and supporting Japan’s objective of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
Japan’s reliance on nuclear energy was significantly reduced following the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi disaster, leading to the shutdown of many of its nuclear facilities. However, in recent years, the government has gradually leaned back towards nuclear power as a vital component of its long-term energy strategy.
