Japan’s government has clarified a misinterpretation that occurred during a joint press conference in New Delhi, which led Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to mistakenly refer to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comments about her. The confusion arose on July 2 when Takaichi mentioned that Modi had called her his “beautiful sister,” a statement that stemmed from an error in translation.
According to Japanese officials, the misunderstanding originated from Modi’s use of the term “my sister” in Hindi, which was intended to be translated into English as “my younger sister.” However, as the interpretation moved from Hindi to English and subsequently to Japanese, it was inaccurately rendered as “beautiful sister.” This relay in translation led Takaichi to believe the description was correct, prompting her to repeat it during the conference.
In her remarks, Takaichi expressed that she and Modi had agreed to maintain a sibling-like relationship. The Japanese government has since acknowledged the complexity of simultaneous relay interpretation as the source of the mistake. Despite the error, diplomatic relations between Japan and India remain unaffected, with Indian officials not raising any issues regarding the mistranslation.
