Dwayne Johnson Labels Moana a Warrior in Upcoming Live-Action Film.

A fresh take on Disney’s classic tale, the live-action adaptation of Moana, reimagines its protagonist as a daring warrior rather than the archetypal princess. This modern version aims to captivate a new wave of viewers by highlighting themes of bravery, empathy, and the richness of cultural identity.

Dwayne Johnson returns to portray the charismatic demigod Maui, a role he originally voiced in the 2016 animated movie. Johnson, who also takes on the role of producer for this project, emphasized that Moana is portrayed as “not a princess, but a warrior.” He noted that the film’s exploration of community, self-discovery, and Polynesian culture holds a universal appeal, resonating with audiences across different ages.

The title role is brought to life by 19-year-old Australian actress Catherine Lagaʻaia, who is of Samoan descent. Selected from a staggering pool of over 32,000 auditionees, Catherine reflects the film’s commitment to authenticity and representation. She shared that embodying Moana has been a journey of personal growth, inspired by the character’s ability to choose understanding and compassion over anger in challenging situations.

This adaptation strives to engage Gen Alpha by emphasizing resilience and authenticity while preserving the essence of the beloved original narrative. Through its portrayal of Moana’s journey, the film encourages viewers to embrace cultural heritage and inner strength.

Moana made its debut in India on July 10, with screenings available in both English and Hindi, further expanding its global reach and inviting audiences to experience the timeless story anew.
