Asian stock markets displayed mixed performances on Monday as Brent crude oil prices remained above $104 per barrel. This development followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a plan to purchase Russian diesel, a move intended to alleviate fuel prices but criticized by U.S. lawmakers due to concerns over funding Russia amid its ongoing war with Ukraine.
In the Asian markets, South Korea’s Kospi dropped 3.7% to 6,384.24, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index rose 0.3% to 24,271.20. Shanghai’s Composite Index fell 0.4% to 3,797.24, whereas Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 increased by 0.8% to 8,783.20. India’s Sensex saw a decline of 0.8%, and Tokyo’s markets were closed for a holiday.
Meanwhile, European stock markets experienced gains. Germany’s DAX index rose 0.5% to 25,213.52, France’s CAC 40 increased by 0.3% to 7,826.70, and the UK’s FTSE 100 advanced by 0.5% to 10,602.21.
President Trump stated that the diesel agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin would initially supply over 300,000 tonnes, with further shipments planned for the following months. However, concerns have been raised due to the potential support of Russian energy revenues, prompting a bipartisan group of U.S. senators to urge a reversal of the decision.
While Trump indicated that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an energy ceasefire, the lack of detailed information and ongoing reports of attacks on energy infrastructure have cast doubt on its effectiveness. Brent crude oil saw a slight increase of 0.1% to $104.76 per barrel, while U.S. benchmark crude fell by 0.4% to $91.50.
The energy market remains volatile, influenced by uncertainties related to the conflict with Iran and global energy supply disruptions. Additionally, U.S. consumers are grappling with renewed inflation concerns, as a University of Michigan survey revealed expectations of inflation rising to 4.7% over the next year. Investors are also closely monitoring upcoming U.S. inflation and retail sales data, along with quarterly earnings reports from major banks, for further insights into the economic landscape.
