Japanese Firms Boost Investment in India’s Semiconductor Sector

Japanese semiconductor companies are increasingly establishing a foothold in India as the nation focuses on building a robust domestic chip manufacturing sector. This move was highlighted by the participation of over 30 Japanese companies at the Semicon India 2026 event in New Delhi, where discussions revolved around investment opportunities, technology partnerships, and enhancing supply chains and research and development.

India is ambitiously working towards becoming a global hub for semiconductors, with plans encompassing chip materials, design, manufacturing, packaging, and testing. The government’s initiatives to boost domestic semiconductor capabilities also include developing a skilled workforce, an area where industry officials note a shortage of specialized skills despite a large pool of engineering talent.

Several Japanese companies have already forged partnerships with Indian firms to support this growth. Fujifilm is collaborating with Tata Electronics on advanced semiconductor materials, while Sumitomo Chemical is exploring cooperation on semiconductor material supply chains. Additionally, Enomoto is expected to contribute production technology support.

Tokyo Electron has announced plans to launch a training center in Gujarat by 2027. This facility aims to cultivate engineers with expertise in semiconductor manufacturing equipment, addressing the talent gap and facilitating technology transfer and workforce development.

The growing engagement of Japanese firms is anticipated to bolster India’s semiconductor supply chain, ultimately supporting the country’s vision of establishing itself as a formidable player in the global semiconductor industry.
