While the flexibility is a major draw for talent, the human cost of being “perpetually reachable” is starting to show. Workers are reporting higher levels of irritability and a sense of being “drained” that was less common in traditional office settings.

Analysis of remote work behavior suggests that this fatigue is often the result of “cognitive overload.” When the brain is forced to manage work stress in a space intended for rest, it never fully recovers. Each minor decision—when to start, when to eat, which task to tackle first—uses up valuable mental fuel. By the end of the day, many individuals find they have no willpower left for their personal lives or hobbies.

Creating “hard boundaries” is the most effective way to combat this exhaustion. This includes setting specific working hours and creating a physical workspace that can be “closed” at the end of the day. Using mindfulness and intentional breaks can also help restore the mental focus needed to stay productive without feeling overwhelmed.
