“It’s gonna be great for everybody,” President Donald Trump said, hyping his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping despite severe new trade friction.
Speaking in Tokyo, Trump confirmed the “big meeting” would take place in South Korea on Thursday, during the APEC summit. “I think it’s going to work out very well,” he added.
His optimism comes as the trade war has flared up. The US has threatened 100% tariffs from November 1.
This was in response to China’s new controls on rare earth exports. The escalation has also seen new US port fees and Chinese countermeasures.
Trump also noted that both he and President Xi “have a lot to talk about,” signaling a major negotiation is planned.
The president’s broader trip through Asia has been squarely focused on trade, aiming to highlight America’s influence on the global economy.
